DPFs – why the industry is going back to them

Over the last 6 months, we have noticed a trend from mine sites, turning back towards DPFs over “cleaner” diesel emission control measures. Why is this?

1. DPFs have less downtime, and no sensors or complications. Because DPFs have no sensors to trip and fail, they are a more reliable and user-friendly method. If they do fail, there is not much downtime to fix them. The Tier 4 Final System (ad-blue) is a very temperamental system that has a lot of downtime due to sensors tripping out.
2. Any qualified mechanic can fit them. The SCR/Ad-Blue/Tier 4 Final Sstem generally requires an OEM call-out for fitting and maintenance. This can be very costly for remote locations.
3. DPFs are fail-safe. They are a fail-safe method, they eliminate diesel particulate matter, and they don’t produce nano-particles (nano-particles can be produced by SCR systems that are still harmful and carcinogenic).
4. Guaranteed results. DPFs will 100% guarantee that you will have a safe workspace. There has been in the past an Ad Blue shortage, this halts machines on the ground. With DPFs, you are guaranteed this will never happen.
